You may not be aware of this, but if you invite a group of people over to watch the NFL, you could be breaking the law. Not really, but yes you could be. The 55 inch tv screen law is real, but not really, but yes it is real, just not for churches and guys like us.

The 55 Inch TV Screen Law

The answer to this question lies in Section 110 of the Copyright law – entitled “Limitations on exclusive rights: exemption of certain performances and displays.” Within that section, there are a number of copyright restrictions related to big screen televisions and projector screens. There are also several exemptions to those restrictions.  So essentially, as long as you are watching the game in your private home and are not charging admission, you can have a giant one-bazillion inch television or projector and cram your house full of people like a clown car and not worry about it. Just be sure not to use the outside of your house as the projector screen or otherwise make it visible outside of your home so it does not become a public viewing. Which even then seems a bit ridiculous, being that whether we watch in your house or my back yard, we still see the same game with the same commercials.

So essentially, it comes down to asking for payment to come to my bowl party. Even if I’m charging for the beer and pizza, I’m operating as an unregistered restaurant I suppose. The bottom line is, we all know if we’re illegally distributing NFL proprietary products are not. So if you come to my Super Bowl party this year, and buy one of my exclusive Tom Brady autographed deflated pop Warner footballs, there might be an attorney knocking at your door next week.
