Wire Concealment

When you conceal wires through the wall you need to first consider few things. Generally, concealing wires In-wall over fireplace is far different than In-Wall Concealment. And there’s much more work involved to hide wires in-wall over fireplace and therefore you need to set your budget accordingly. And you also need to know whether or not the wires can be fished through the wall by knowing the structure of your fireplace and surrounding wall. Usually, in a modern house or a town home, the wall is built with drywall and wooden studs around the Gas burning fireplace and you can fish the wires though the wall in most cases. But if you got a Wood burning fireplace that is usually found in older homes then the wall is most likely built with bricks around the fireplace and you won’t be able to fish the wires through.

If you live in a newer house or townhouse and want to mount your TV over Gas fireplace on the main floor and if your basement is unfinished, then wires can be fished from above the fireplace, down to the basement and then fish the wires back up to the main floor through a wall and come out where your components are going to be placed. But if your basement is finished, then the drywall would have to be cut open in order to drill through every single stud to feed wires through the studs horizontally across the wall and then fish them down near by the baseboard where your components will be placed.

Below is general list of things required for in-wall wire concealment

  • Wall structure that has cavity behind the wall where cables can be fished through such as drywall with wooden studs or drywall with metal studs.
  • Electrical outlet above the fireplace where it would end up behind the TV
  • Electrical outlet by where the components will be placed
  • If you have cable or satellite box then Coax jack is necessary where the cable box or satellite box will be placed (if you have wireless Bell Fibe TV box then this is not necessary)
  • AV cables such as HDMI or Optical cable, etc… long enough to reach from the TV to your components.

Pictures below show examples of TV wall mount installation over fireplace with wires concealed behind the wall. If your TV is to be mounted on a main floor of a newer house and if the basement is unfinished then basement can be used to route the wires over across the room. If your basement is finished then fishing wires horizontally across the wall will require cutting the drywall to drill through every single stud to the point where the cables need to come out as there are studs in the wall usually 16″ apart.
